Frequently Asked Questions

Chemistry is the study of matter – including how compounds and elements are structured and how they interact with each other.

An Adolescence Education in Chemistry degree from Roberts will consist of both courses in chemistry (such as Principles of Chemistry and Organic Chemistry) and in education (such as Specialized Teaching Methods and Foundations of Lesson Planning).

Chemistry teachers need at least a bachelor’s degree. The type of degree they get is flexible – whether it be in elementary education, chemistry, or a mix of the disciplines, like the Adolescence Education in Chemistry degree one can get at Roberts. After that, you’ll go on to pursue the necessary certification for the state/area you’d like to teach in.

Many teachers do go on to obtain a master’s or even doctorate, as well. Some states (New York, Maryland, and Connecticut) require teachers to obtain their master’s degree in teaching or education in a certain amount of time to maintain their teaching certification. Along with that, many districts pay teachers who obtain their master’s degrees more than those who don’t.

According to the US Bureau of Labor, the median annual wage for middle and high school teachers in 2023 was about $65,220.

Naturally, the numbers will differ by area, type of school, and position.
