MSW - Advanced Standing Option

Complete your MSW in as few as 11 months

Students prepared with a bachelor's in social work (BSW) can complete the MSW degree in less time through the Advanced Standing Option.

Once accepted into the MSW program, students may bypass the foundational courses to pursue their desired concentration if the following criteria are met:

  • Demonstrate that the foundational knowledge, values, skills, and cognitive and affective functioning provided at the BSW level have been sufficiently mastered, and
  • Successful completion* of three Advanced Standing courses (*students must average at least a B across these three courses, with only one B- allowed).
    • GSWK 5440 | Advanced Standing Seminar
    • GSWK 5600 | Spirituality and Religion in Social Work Practice
    • GSWK 5650 | Psychopathology


Additional courses are required through the Advanced Standing Course Sequence. The 38 credit course sequence can be completed in 12 months for students beginning in the summer term or 16 months for those starting in January.
