The Humanities major is designed primarily to serve two types of students: those who are drawn in interest and ability to the study of the humanities, and those whose future specialization would be enhanced by a multiplicity of academic experiences in the humanities, e.g., those interested in library science, law, journalism, politics, teaching, etc.

SPECIFICS OF THE HUMANITIES B.A. DEGREE

Minimum Total Hours:

Total Liberal Arts Hours: 90

General Education Requirements: Per General Education list (see General Education Council). Exception:American Sign Language may not be used to meet the foreign language proficiency requirement.

Minimum Requirements: GPA of 2.0 in the major and overall; no grade less than C- in the major.

Transfer Requirements: See institutional transfer policies

Application to the Major: Special application form and requirements to be secured from the Department of Language and Literature or online at the Department's intranet site and submitted at the end of the sophomore year. (Note: The standard institutional major application will not be accepted.)  A minimum overall GPA of 2.0 is required for acceptance to the major.

Major Requirements: 45 hours as follows:

  • a 21-hour concentration from one of the following disciplines: Art, Communication, History, Language, Literature, Music, Philosophy-Religion (BIB/PHL/REL/THE);
  • a 9-hour emphasis from one of the following disciplines not used above: Art, Communication, Composition, Fine Arts (ART/FNA/MUS/THR), History, Language, Literature, Music, Philosophy-Religion (BIB/PHL/REL/THE), Theater, Women's Studies;
  • two 6-hour emphases from one of the following disciplines not used above: Art, Communication, Composition, Fine Arts (ART/FNA/MUS/THR), History, Language, Literature, Music, Philosophy-Religion (BIB/PHL/REL/THE), Theater, Women's Studies;
  • one 3-hour elective from any of the disciplines listed above.

Special Notes: 

  • Each concentration/emphasis within the major must include at least one 300-/400-level course.
  • A course used to meet a General Education Program requirement cannot also be used in any of the concentrations or emphases.
  • No more than 3 hours of music ensemble or applied lessons may count for any concentration or emphasis.
  • Up to 6 hours of composition (CMP) courses may count toward a 21-hour Communication concentration.
  • Fine Arts may not be selected as an emphasis if Art, Music, or Theater were selected for the concentration or any other emphasis.
  • When selecting Theater as an emphasis, only courses with a THR prefix can count toward the 6-hour emphasis; 6 hours of a 9-hour Theater emphasis must be from courses with a THR prefix.
  • When selecting Women's Studies as an emphasis, all courses in the Women's Studies minor are allowed except PSY/SOC 202-Human Sexuality.
