Costa Rica Cross-Cultural Nursing Clinical Experience

Each year the School of Nursing offers a cross-cultural trip to Costa Rica for Nursing majors. The experience (which is also a for-credit course) is open to juniors and seniors with a focus on global health, professional practice, and special attention to cultural sensitivity and avoiding paternalism. Discussions include practice scope and nursing in missions.

It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to learn and experience health care in a different cultural context. Students plan and implement the trip, taking leadership roles in patient flow, supply management, team debrief, and translator education/coordination. It’s a 10-day trip at the end of the spring semester and involves 5 clinic days with underserved and refugee populations who have minimal access to health care.

Roberts partners with Christ for the City International and students/instructors stay with host families during their time there. Students have said the experience is integral in providing them practical experience for relating with patients from another culture and integrating their faith with their nursing profession. In addition, it helps cultivate a hunger and excitement for missions!
