Roberts Awards 2017 Athletic Hall of Fame Honors to 1964-67 Men's Basketball Teams

On Friday, September 22, 2017 at Homecoming 2017 the first team induction into the Roberts Athletic Hall of Fame took place. The members of the Men’s Basketball Teams from 1964-67 were inducted as a group.

Bob Segave, Director of Athletics, said in his introduction, “Today, for the first time we induct a team, a very special team that represent the greatest era of Men’s Basketball at Roberts Wesleyan College. A team of lasting significance is not born overnight.  The seeds were planted and nurtured under the leadership of Coach Bill Hughes in 1964–65 when the team was 14–6.  We recognize a team that had a record of 18–4 in 1965-66 and came back the next season, in our 100th year with a 20–5 record that included an amazing run of 16 straight victories, many school records, and a team that brought home the first ever Monroe County Tournament Championship, which would eventually run for 50 years and become the longest in-season tournament in the country.”

Almost the entire group was able to be in attendance, and by all accounts, they were and still are a very tight-knit group. Bob Segave went on to say, “We are certainly here to recognize the outstanding talents of Coach Hughes and the Raiders.  Many of these men are in the Roberts Athletic Hall of Fame for their individual accomplishments. (Frank Carter left as the school’s all-time leading scorer and Bill Bachmann the all-time leading rebounder). I would like to focus on the lifelong relationships I have seen, their love for each other I have been fortunate to witness in action, and the way this TEAM energized our campus!”

Team comments included words by Harry Hutt ’65, Frank Carter ’67, and Coach Bill Hughes. A wonderful reflection entitled, “A Big Lesson Learned 50 Years Ago” was posted online by team member Glen Shultz ’68 and can be viewed here:  http://kingdomeducation.org/a-big-lesson-learned-50-years-ago/.
