The initiative focuses on growing teachers in the Finger Lakes Region
Since 1866, Roberts Wesleyan College has provided outstanding education and demonstrated the effectiveness of building partnerships. Effective immediately, Roberts Wesleyan College is partnering with Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC) in a new articulation agreement to provide a seamless transition into the Pathway to Teaching, B.S. program for more FLCC students and people in the Finger Lakes Region. This program enables students to complete a bachelor's degree and become a certified teacher in a 21-month, 1-night-a-week format geared towards working adults.
The Pathway to Teaching program leads to dual-certification in both general and special education at the childhood (grades 1-6) or adolescence (grades 7-12) levels. This agreement will leverage an existing partnership that Roberts Wesleyan has in place with the Geneva School District. In addition, the new FLCC agreement will further the college’s efforts to offer the Pathway to Teaching program to more school districts in the Greater Rochester Area. The college started with an onsite Pathway to Teaching cohort in the Greece Central School District in 2018 and then added East Irondequoit as a partner in 2020. Roberts Wesleyan will draw upon those learnings to help more people pursue education as a career.
“We have heard from school districts that programs of this nature would most certainly be welcomed and utilized by people to continue working while pursuing their dreams of becoming a teacher,” said Kristen Nielsen, enrollment outreach manager for Roberts Wesleyan College. “Districts want to be able to grow their own educators and people want to be able to pursue this dream without starting over or giving up on other areas of their lives. This agreement offers a pathway for someone to move from high school, into community college, and through their bachelor’s degree with the ability to work and study simultaneously. It also gives working adults who haven't finished their degrees the freedom to keep moving. Finally, it helps area districts work to fill current and future gaps that are a result of the teacher shortage,” she said.
The college is already working with more than a dozen school districts in its Corporate Partnerships program, where employees of those districts receive a 25% tuition discount. The program provides affordable and accessible educational opportunities for local businesses, including school districts, committed to supporting higher education for their employees.
