During the first year, Visual Art Education students take art foundation courses (ART 102, 103, 104, 105) and introductory education courses. In their sophomore year, students begin studying methods of art education with ART 318 and 319, while in the junior year they complete this sequence with ART 421 and 422. Students complete their teaching practicum during their senior year along with a senior capstone in both Art and Visual Art Education.
SPECIFICS OF THE VISUAL ART EDUCATION B.S. DEGREE
Minimum Total Hours: 129
Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 60
General Education Requirements: Per General Education list (see General Education Division). Exceptions: MUS 104 or FNA 102 (only one course is required and ART 101 is not permitted).
Minimum Requirements: Overall and major GPA of 2.7; no grade less than C in the major; no grade less than B- in art education methods courses (ART 318, 319, 421, 422, 482); no grade less than C+ in 100- and 200-level EDU courses; no grade less than B- in 300- and 400-level EDU courses; minimum grade of C in CMC 101, CMP 101, and mathematics proficiency course.
Transfer Requirements: See institutional transfer policies. Transfers who intend to major in Art must submit a portfolio and meet with faculty before beginning art courses.
Application to the Major: Standard institutional major application form to be submitted to the Division of Visual Arts by December 1 of the sophomore year. The Visual Art Education application process will culminate with the Sophomore Review in the spring of the second year. A GPA of 2.0 in art education courses is required to be accepted to the major. A minimum overall GPA of 2.7 is required to be accepted and remain in the major. If work is below a C, faculty will suggest a change of major. In addition, students must apply to the Teacher Education Division after completing two EDU courses (EDU 190 and EDU 202) and must apply to student teach by the appropriate deadline. Major Requirements: 58.5 hours
- Sequential art history courses: ART 191, ART 291, ART 391, ART 491 (ART 490 may be substituted for one art history course);
- Both senior capstone courses (ART 496 and 497);
- 12 hours of foundations courses during first two semesters (ART 102, 103, 104, and 105);
- 18 hours of 200-level studio courses;
- 12.5 hours of art methods courses: ART 318, ART 319 with corresponding observation/participation experience, ART 421, ART 422, ART 482.
Professional Education Requirements: 27.5 hours
- EDU 190, EDU 302, and EDU 330 including all corresponding observation/participation experiences;
- EDU 202;
- EDU 380;
- EDU 404 A and B - Art Student Teaching;
- EDU 444 - K-12 Student Teaching Generalist Seminar;
- Training in Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment;
- Training in School Violence Prevention and Intervention.
