Adolescence Education, B.S.

The Adolescence Education programs lead to initial certification in the major for grades 7-12, with a 5-6 extension in the subject area of the initial certificate. The comprehensive programs emphasize practical, hands-on learning including field experiences in area classrooms where students observe, participate, and refine effective teaching methods. The degree requires a minimum of 124-125 semester hours (138-143 semester hours for students pursuing the General Science extension) with 60 semester hours in Liberal Arts (for definition of Liberal Arts see the Educational Programs section). A cumulative grade point average of 2.7 is required for student teaching and for graduation. Grades of no less than C in all major courses are required for certification. This undergraduate program leads to an initial teaching certification in one of the following subject areas:

A. Biology (grades 7-12; with 5-6 extension)
B. Chemistry (grades 7-12; with 5-6 extension)
C. English (grades 7-12; with 5-6 extension)
D. Mathematics (grades 7-12; with 5-6 extension)
E. Physics (grades 7-12; with 5-6 extension)
F. Social Studies (grades 7-12; with 5-6 extension)
G. Spanish (grades 7-12; with 5-6 extension)

Specific general education and content core courses are suggested for use in the programs depending upon one’s major. Consult the appropriate division for a comprehensive list of requirements for the degree.

  • EDU 380-Language Acquisition & Literacy Development (3);

* OPE means Observation/Participation Experience (Fieldwork)

Students must register for OPE concurrently with course of same number, e.g., EDU 302 and EDU 302 OPE.
