Level Placement

When entering the ELI, students have two choices for level placement. The first is based on language assessment scores and the second is through a portfolio project.

Entrance- Language Assessment Scores

Prior to enrollment at the English Language Institute, students will take one of three language assessments, including Internet-based TOEFL, Paper-based TOEFL, or IELTS. Their score will determine their level placement. This is the most common method of entering the ELI.

Entrance- Portfolio

Students who wish to challenge their test scores may do so by creating a portfolio of work and presenting the information to the Director of the English Language Institute.

The portfolio must include a variety of work that demonstrates exceeding the expectations put forth by course Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) for the level below the level they wish to enter. For example, a student petitioning to enter the ELI at a Level 4, must create a portfolio of work demonstrating they have meet the expectations of the SLOs for all coursework for a Level 3 student. Once the portfolio is created, the student will need to schedule a meeting with the Director of the ELI and present the portfolio while explaining how the work meets the criteria set forth by the SLOs. The Director may also request additional academic coursework for consideration. Upon satisfactory demonstration of abilities and approval of the Director, student will be allowed to enter at the Level petitioned.
