Global Honors Program Visits Brazil

8 students take a selfie

Roberts Wesleyan University’s Global Honors Program recently spent three weeks studying in Brazil. This immersive experience is carefully designed to give students applied learning experiences and expand their worldview. Before students traveled to Brazil, they took a course to learn about the culture and history as well as basic Portuguese vocabulary.

“We drove from Roberts to Toronto, Canada to catch our flight to Brazil. On the bus ride to Toronto, the nervousness turned into excitement. I knew this would be an experience of a lifetime,” said Karly Tausch ‘25 (Nursing).

Students experienced their field of study in an international setting. Each student was able to shadow someone working in their major. Students were paired with a host family so they could learn more about the country and culture. In the end, many students built a bond which will be cherished for years to come.

“Over the last two weeks, I have expanded my family and I couldn’t be happier. The Perina family has welcomed me into their home with open arms, and they will always have a place in my heart,” said Sydney Elmore ‘25 (Adolescent English Education).

“By the time my birthday rolled around the first Friday we were here, I felt at home. I was greeted with a song and big hugs before school, and treated to cake, brigadiero, and late night talks. It didn’t feel like I had just met them only a few days prior, but felt like I had always been part of their family,” said Elmore.

“It is exciting to experience a new and beautiful culture and to learn about life that is different from my previous experience. I am thankful for this opportunity to learn and to grow,” said Sarina Pasquantonio ‘25 (Biomedical Sciences).

Students experienced a samba class

“For instance, we had a samba class this morning, which was very fun and hard work. In addition to samba, we visited a culinary school where we were taught about the various regions in Brazil and what foods are a part of each region’s culture. Both of these events allowed me to understand the culture that lies here in Brazil and take time to reflect on the beauty of this country.”
