Share thisCriminal Justice, Social Work and Psychology Students Collaborating with Sheriff's Department for Real-World Learning Experience
Roberts Wesleyan College, in collaboration with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and OLV Human Services, is currently conducting a research study that examines police reform, primarily in the areas of crisis and mental health response, through the lens of law enforcement, academia, and restorative and social justice.
This project enhances the student experience through a collaborative approach to research. The Criminal Justice department, working with the Social Work and Psychology departments, will use this research study to create a cross disciplinary minor that students in all three of these majors can take. This 15-18 credit cross disciplinary minor in restorative and social justice will be taught by practitioner professors, who will introduce the ideologies, methodologies, and practices of each of their respective disciplines to the students.
This is a multi-layered research project that includes quantitative and qualitative surveys that will be sent to over 1000 participants to gain a better understanding on:
- Police perceptions
- Cross disciplinary perceptions
- Law Enforcement perceptions
- Community perceptions
In addition to the surveys, the research project team will be collecting and analyzing both scholarly and open source information to support, and include in, the findings, recommendations and conclusions.
