Tips to Start Fresh this Semester

Welcome back to a new year, and your spring semester, at Roberts. Did you know that the beginning of every semester is a fresh start? So whether this is your first semester or you are preparing for graduation, consider today a chance for a new beginning!

As you start the semester, never hesitate to reach out to your advisor, career development, your Redhawk guide or faculty for help. At Roberts, we want you to reach your full potential.

Evaluate Last Semester & Start the New Year Off Right

You completed your fall semester and that’s quite a feat! 2020 is a new year, so whether you did poorly in your academics last semester or “hit it out of the park”, this semester set goals. Look at areas that you may need to be more disciplined. Take advantage of the resources available to you on campus. If you have a difficult course this semester, go to the Learning Center and request a tutor who can help you with a class. It’s free and you have nothing to lose, everything to gain. Don’t forget to use the Writing Center to become a better writer for any stage of the writing process. Take advantage of these opportunities early on and you’ll thank yourself later. Think about new ways to make your dreams a reality.

Make a Fresh Start & Get Involved

If you felt you could be more involved last semester, attend the events and activities that your RA and dorm offer. These are usually advertised on campus. You may feel like not attending, but make the effort to show up to those activities because you’ll probably enjoy them a lot and meet some new friends. Our goal is to organize and provide these events and your goal could be to make a new friend, maybe even a new best friend or future partner, just by attending. Some ideas are:

  • BASIC (Brothers and Sisters in Christ) Meetings: Great way to grow in long lasting friendships! Each meeting has games, worship, and lots of coffee. For more information, email Ivancic_Kaitlyn@roberts.edu.
  • Attend Arcade Night on Feb. 1 from 9-11 PM in Garlock Commons: Enjoy an evening of video games and other arcade novelties! Sponsored by Student Association Social Life Committee.
  • Ice Skating on Feb. 1 from 7-9 PM: Go ice skating at Bill Gray's Ice Complex! Transportation leaving Garlock loop at 7 PM. Sponsored by the Freshman Class of 2023 Council.
  • Attend a SMAC meeting: The Student Multicultural Advisory Council (SMAC) breaks barriers and builds bridges by accepting, embracing, and celebrating people from all cultures. For more information, contact Alexander_Herbert@roberts.edu.

Make Every Effort

It’s normal to feel anxious about the new semester, feel a bit homesick or miss friends back home. Make a conscience effort to get through it and in a few weeks’ time, you will be feeling more normal and yourself. If the meantime; reach out to others around you – friends, faculty, staff, trustworthy family members – or make an appointment with the Counseling Center on campus. A few ideas to put yourself out there in 2020:

  • Say hello yourself to the person sitting next to you in class
  • Join at least one club or attend one new event
  • Answer questions in class and share your opinions
  • Go to chapel and do something good with the messages you hear
  • Sign up for a service project

Today is a perfect time to make a brand new start to bring out the best student in you. Start off 2020 with fresh energy and a positive mindset! Have a great semester Redhawks!
