World-Renowned American Spiritual Ensemble to Perform March 7 at Roberts

Roberts Wesleyan College will host the critically acclaimed American Spiritual Ensemble for a performance at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in the Andrew B. Hale auditorium, located inside the Roberts Cultural Life Center. The ensemble has entertained audiences around the world with their dynamic renditions of classic spirituals and Broadway numbers.

Comprising nearly 20 members from around the world, the ensemble’s diverse repertoire spans several genres, with a mission to keep the American Negro spiritual alive. Soloists entertain audiences with impressive compositions ranging from classic spirituals to jazz and Broadway numbers that highlight the black experience.

Founded in 1995 by Dr. Everett McCorvey, the ensemble has performed in storied venues that are home to the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Boston Opera and more. The ensemble has also performed abroad for audiences in England, Germany, Italy, Japan and Scotland, and has completed seven tours in Spain.

The ensemble remains under the direction of McCorvey, an acclaimed tenor soloist and vocal professor who has performed at the Kennedy Center, Metropolitan Opera, Radio City Music Hall, and opera houses in several countries throughout Europe and Asia. McCorvey serves on the artist faculty of the American Institute of Musical Study in Graz, Austria, and holds an endowed alumni professorship alongside directorial and faculty roles at the University of Kentucky.
