Roberts Named a 2019 Great College to Work For

Honor by Modern Think Puts Local Institution on Elite List Fifth Year in a Row

Roberts Wesleyan College announced that the institution has been named on the 2019 Great Colleges to Work For list by Modern Think, one of the largest and most respected workplace recognition programs in the country.

The college was recognized in six categories: Teaching Environment; Confidence in Senior Leadership; Facilities, Workspace and Security, Tenure Clarity and Process; Work/Life Balance; and Supervisor/Department Chair Relationships.

“Roberts Wesleyan is a great college because of our excellent team of faculty and staff who exemplify the vision and mission of the college,” said Deana L. Porterfield, president of Roberts Wesleyan College. “It is exciting to be recognized as a leader among institutions of higher education, as our strategic plan includes priorities of an engaged campus culture, innovative growth and transformational partnerships. We believe that our employees reflect these priorities in ways that help our students reach their full potential.  Since 1866 we have been anchored in our faith in providing a life-impacting education, spiritual formation and the opportunity to serve others.”

Roberts Wesleyan was also selected for the 2019 Honor Roll distinction, which consists of stand-out universities in its size categories. Only 42 institutions are on the Honor Roll.

Now in its 12th year, Great Colleges to Work For recognizes the colleges that get top ratings from their employees on workforce practices and policies. A total of 85 colleges have been recognized on the list out of the 236 participating institutions that applied. Employees from Roberts Wesleyan College participated in the two-part assessment survey hosted by ModernThink.

Roberts Wesleyan College was recognized in the following six categories:

  • Teaching Environment: Faculty members say the institution recognizes innovative and high-quality teaching.
  • Confidence in Senior Leadership: Leaders have the necessary knowledge, skills and experience for institutional success.
  • Facilities, Workspace and Security: Facilities adequately meet needs, the appearance of the campus is pleasing and the institution takes steps to provide a secure environment.
  • Tenure Clarity and Process (4-year colleges only): Requirements for tenure are clear, faculty members say.
  • Work/Life Balance: Policies give employees the flexibility to manage their personal lives.
  • Supervisor/Department Chair Relationship: Supervisor makes expectations clear and solicits ideas.

Competing against hundreds of institutions across the country, Roberts Wesleyan College participated in a rigorous selection process, which included a two-part assessment: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators and staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback.

“The institutions recognized in this year’s Great Colleges to Work For program don’t wait for problems to occur to pay attention to their people,” said Rich Boyer, Senior Consultant at ModernThink. “Conversely, they’re intentional (and successful!) in being good stewards of their institutions’ cultures and shaping the day-to-day experience of their faculty and staff to the ultimate benefit of their students.”
