Student Spotlight: Vivek "Vik" Christy '19, Homeland Security & Applied Intelligence

Share what your internship assignment was and where it was located.

I interned with the Town of Ogden Police Department as a crime intelligence analyst.

A crime analyst generally collects information from different sources, processes them, analyzes and finally converts the information into actionable intelligence that would assist the field officers.

During your internship you learned new skills, share how you learned personally and professionally.

As a crime analyst, I was able to work with various analytical tools and databases that are utilized by the police department including crime mapping. This experience also allowed me to create relationships with the chief of police and officers while assisting them with projects.  Creating these relationships was the most rewarding aspect for me.

Share about your experience and the knowledge gained during your internship.

I was able to work on projects and cases using tools and to collect data. I gained knowledge a geographical information system that a framework for gathering, managing, and analyzing data.  It is used for hotspot crime mapping and geocoding too. Another part of the internship was participating in ride-alongs with the chief and police officers.

What from your academic coursework at Roberts was most helpful in your internship?

My major, Homeland Security & Applied Intelligence, prepared me to work in the field by teaching different crime analytical methods such as spatial analysis, temporal analysis, building intelligence products, link analysis and GIS mapping. Having this knowledge prior to the internship gave me the confidence to be successful and has enabled me to become a New York State certified crime analyst.

How has your internship helped prepare you for the transition from student to working professional?

My passion is to become an FBI analyst. This internship has given me more confidence in myself as well as the hands-on experience needed to work in the field of crime intelligence analysis. Not only by becoming familiar with various analytical tools and databases but also observing law enforcement and court procedures.

Kirby Trasks

Kirby Trask, M.A., Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice; Chair, Department of Criminal Justice

“Vivek always has a smile on his face and is truly interested in learning.  He sees the glass as half full rather than half empty.  Growing up in Dubai, a city in the United Arab Emirates, Vivek brings with him into the classroom a rich cultural diversity.  He is engaged as a student in the Homeland Security & Applied Intelligence Program and is currently working as an Intern Crime Analyst for the Ogden Police Department.  Vivek is gifted with the use of computers, which will serve him well in his future career endeavors.  He is also active with the Criminal Justice Club, as well as other organizations on campus.  I'll never forget Vivek's first snowfall experience during his first year at Roberts.  He made snow angles, participated in snowball wars and fully embraced the snowy weather.  Perhaps most important, Vivek is a person of solid faith which he lives out in his daily life."
