Student Spotlight: Isaiah Lewis– Junior ‘20

Isaiah Lewis

Receiving awards is an honor for any student; can you share how it felt to receive the Rochester Area Business Ethics Scholarship?

Winning that award was both pretty exciting and humbling. I know that I have many peers that were also very deserving of the award. Growing up my parents always emphasized to do the right thing, so to be recognized for that in a college setting is pretty cool to me. It is definitely one of my top accomplishments and I am proud to be a recipient.

What stands out from your experience here at Roberts?

The level of how personal you can get with the faculty and staff probably stands out to me the most. A lot of times at college it’s easy to just become a number and not really get to know any staff personally who work at the college, and at Roberts that just isn’t the case. I think the chance to establish relationships and connections with people at Roberts is one of the best things that the college has to offer.

What is the best thing about studying Business Administration?

To me there are two things that I think are the best about studying business administration. First is the variety of jobs that you can obtain with this degree. You aren’t limited in the career paths for the future, so having a change of heart with what you want to ultimately do doesn’t affect you too much with this program. I also like that what you learn can be applied to essentially any facet of life. With a business degree you learn how to maximize profit, both personally and professionally.

What is your Dream Job? How is Roberts helping achieve this?

My dream job is to be a professional basketball player! I would also like to be an Athletic Director at a college. Roberts is helping me achieve these by pushing me to be my best self every day. In basketball my coaches push me, they don’t let me slack off, or cheat myself. They help me create habits that are going to get me to where I want to be. In the classroom teachers do the same thing. I think by getting to know your professors on a personal level they challenge you to grow more than they would if you didn’t have that strong relationship with them.

What is your favorite course here at Roberts?

My favorite course so far has been intro sports management and marketing with Professor Delfino who is also the Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach.

What is your favorite thing about being on the basketball team at Roberts?

My favorite thing about being on the basketball team here is the fact that I get to do what I love every day at a high level. I know that not everybody gets an opportunity to play at the college level, so I try my best to never take that for granted. This year has been special for me because I get the chance to play with my younger brother. Just getting the chance to compete with him and watch him grow through basketball has probably been the best part of my athletic experience for sure.

Where are you from (hometown)?

I am from Rochester and graduated from Churchville-Chili High School.

Who is your biggest role model at Roberts?

My biggest role model at Roberts is Herb Alexander. He is a mentor and has become like an older brother to me. Knowing where he came from and seeing where he is now is inspiration for me. On top of that, he is somebody who lives out his values daily. If he says something, he lives it out, and that for sure is a quality I think everybody should aspire to have. He is somebody who is a constant reminder (to me) to work hard in anything that you do and never put limitations on yourself.

What’s your favorite sports team? Athlete?

I am a fan of Duke’s basketball team and my favorite athletes are Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat) and Devin Booker (Phoenix Suns).

What is your favorite ice cream?

My favorite Ice cream is strawberry cheesecake.

What is your favorite spot on campus?

The gym is my favorite spot on campus.

Faculty Feedback:

Erv Starr

Dr. Ervin Starr, Professor of Management; Director, Undergraduate Business Program

“Isaiah Lewis exemplifies what we call, a “Scholar-Athlete” because he brings a sense of purpose to everything in which he is involved. I admire his character and consistent demonstration of integrity, balancing the demands of his sport [basketball] and academics, and he is involved in other activities, which clearly illustrates his commitment to personal excellence. Isaiah is a leader on and off the court. When a project manager needed to step down for our Elevate project, Isaiah stepped into a more formal leadership role for the last month to help plan and execute the project. Serving as our lead spokes person in the community to help recruit approximately 70 inner-city youth to come to campus and gain a vision of what continuing their education might look like. He helps to inspire his team, class-mates, and young men and women in our community. He was recently recognized by RABEF (Rochester Area Business Ethics Foundation) for his personal character. It is an honor to work with a student like Isaiah.”
