Roberts to Host Education Symposium with 16 Speakers on Teacher Appreciation Day

Education Professionals Invited to Free Full-Day Workshop on May 8

Roberts Wesleyan College’s School of Education and Department of Social Work will host their Bowman Teacher Education Symposium, “Pivoting on the Educational Pathway: Driving the New Generation of Learners.” The event, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. May 8 in the Howard Stowe Roberts Cultural Life Center, will feature keynote speaker Cheryl Dobbertin, director of learning and school improvement at Monroe #1 BOCES. The purpose of the symposium is to equip educators with ways to increase learning in the classroom through practical methodologies.

In-service teachers, administrators, pre-service teachers and others in the field of education are welcome to attend free of charge. Attendees will receive a CTLE certificate of participation.

In addition to the keynote speaker, attendees will choose from four breakout sessions with 16 expert speakers, ranging from associate principals, instructional technology coaches and teachers to coordinators of curriculum, instruction and professional development, assistant professors, and directors of learning and school improvement. Speakers are from across the region, from Brockport to Ithaca.

“This symposium is named after our dear friend, Dr. Herman Bowman,” said Joe McCarthy, Dean of the School of Teacher Education and Social Work at Roberts Wesleyan College. “He was a passionate teacher and an administrator throughout his career, and this is the reason for his funding of this symposium. He was an incredible leader as a husband, father, soldier, veteran, public school administrator and local church leader.”

Roberts Wesleyan College teacher education alumni are invited to attend a dessert reception immediately following in the Davison Art Gallery to connect with Roberts faculty and alumni from the Teacher Education Department.

RSVPs are required. To sign up, click here. Breakfast and lunch are provided. For questions, please contact Joseph McCarthy, MBA, chair of the Teacher Education Department, at mccarthyj@roberts.edu or 585-594-6935.
