J.M.McDonald Foundation Provides Grant for SimLab Equipment

We are extremely grateful to the J.M. McDonald Foundation for their recent award of $10,000 for the purchase of Simulation Lab equipment. The gift represents the second time the Foundation has invested in the Crothers Science and Nursing Center; the first was for the building itself.

With this new gift, we will be able to purchase manikins and related equipment for our Simulation and Skills Labs, which will be located in the new Science and Nursing Center, currently under construction. The 4-bed Simulation Lab and the 12-bed Skills Lab will allow our Nursing and Pre-Health students to practice vital, life-saving skills in a safe, learning-rich environment.

Simulation training provides our students with the opportunity to become familiar with a variety of health care situations such as a hospital, health office, home or hospice situation in a safe, controlled atmosphere. This allows students to become comfortable and to think through actions and reactions in preparation for actual, critical care decisions. Through a review of choices made and skills practiced, students have the opportunity for further learning as they work through problems with peers and faculty.

The Foundation’s gift will allow us to expand our inventory of Simulation manikins and other related equipment, easing scheduling and allowing us to make these types of simulations available for other majors like Ministry and Social Work, providing vital cross-disciplinary training. It will also allow us to easier schedule Community Health Partners who would benefit from this type of training.

The J. M. McDonald Foundation was created in 1952 and is dedicated to improving education and social programs in Upstate New York. We are grateful for their continued support of our programs and our community.
