Roberts Wesleyan College Anticipates Being Granted Full NCAA DII Member Status

Roberts Wesleyan College anticipates being granted active Division II member status by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

On Friday, July 11, the NCAA released the news of Roberts’ membership. Roberts is one of eight new members approved for active status at the DII Membership Committee meeting July 7-8 in Indianapolis. The change is effective Sept. 1, 2014.

“We are excited to become a full member of NCAA Division II, and we are proud to offer this elite athletic experience to our students. This is a tremendous achievement, and we believe this move aligns with the Redhawks Athletics mission and the strategic plan for the College,” said Dr. Deana L. Porterfield, Roberts Wesleyan College president.

Roberts decided to pursue NCAA Division II membership in 2011, in an effort to advance athletics to a higher level of competition, serve student athletes with integrity and enable scholarships. Roberts’ full membership to NCAA DII is the result of a collaborative effort by many people over the past four years.

“This is a time of growth and hope at the college, and we are thrilled to be the only school representing DII in the region,” Porterfield said. “We look forward to continuing to develop athletics into a highly competitive Division II program that is successful in transforming the lives of our student-athletes, providing them with a positive Christian educational experience and helping them graduate with a high-quality educational degree.”

As an official NCAA member, the Redhawks athletic program will devote attention to the continued growth and success of its programs.  College administrators plan to leverage the NCAA brand to continue recruiting highly skilled student-athletes and provide them with athletic scholarships.

NCAA Division II’s Management Council will meet on July 21-22 to act on the Membership Committee recommendations for active membership.

Jenn Suhr ’04, Olympic Gold Medalist 2012 and World Record Holder, shares her thoughts on Roberts achieving DII active status.
