Student Spotlight: Zoe Perkins ‘24 (Computer Science)

“I could not be happier to be at Roberts now. The community is so amazing.  I’m forever grateful for all the wonderful friends I’ve made here.”

Zoe Perkins ‘24 (Computer Science) is following God into the field of computer science. With plans to start her own business, thanks to her minor in Business Administration, she’s ready for wherever her career takes her.

What’s your calling? What’s one of your career goals?

My callings are to follow the Lord and to love and serve others.

One of my long-term career goals is to start my own business. I plan to look into this goal down the road, after I pursue a career in computer science. My future business might involve some hobbies such as baking, nutrition, or arts and crafts.

Tell me about your internship experience!

I interned at Cellec Technologies, which is a start-up lithium-ion battery company. I worked in the programming department along with two other co-op students.

My experience was very unique because Cellec’s software program was built entirely by college students. The software program was already in use at the company, so my job was to maintain the program. I had only taken a few computer science classes when I began the internship, so I was very inexperienced, but my time at Cellec was an incredible learning opportunity.

I gained ample knowledge and became much more confident in developing code. My patient co-workers helped provide guidance every step of the way.

What is the best thing about studying your major?

The best thing about computer science is the variety of opportunities the field offers.

I chose this major because it provided flexibility to balance my professional and home/family life. One example of how this field might benefit me is that computer-related professions often permit working from home.

What advice would you give to incoming freshmen?

There’s always a period of adjustment when you get to college, but if you wholly lean into the experience, you will not regret it!

I could not be happier to be at Roberts to experience the amazing community.  I’m forever grateful for all the wonderful friends I’ve made here. I’ve developed meaningful relationships with faculty as well.

What's one of your hobbies/passions?

One of my hobbies is competing on Roberts Wesleyan University’s Cross Country and Track and Field teams. Being part of this team is easily my favorite part of attending Roberts. My teammates have become some of my best friends!

Also, I’ve learned so much from Coach Andrew Dorr in my three years here; his tokens of wisdom have helped me grow into a wiser, more perseverant individual.

Overall, I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to challenge myself to improve physically and mentally.
