Roberts Wesleyan University to Launch Associate Degree in Biblical Studies for Adult Learners

This summer, Roberts Wesleyan University will launch a new Associate of Art (A.A.) degree completion program in biblical studies. Offered exclusively online, the program is designed for individuals seeking careers in ministry and is intended for adult learners ages 20 years and older who have earned a high school diploma. The program is approved by the New York State Education Department and will expand Roberts Wesleyan’s growing associate degree program offerings for current and prospective students. 

With an emphasis on a practice-oriented education for individuals interested in developing their understanding of the Bible, the program will prepare students for roles in ministry both inside and outside of church settings. Graduates of the program will be well-equipped to further their studies at the bachelor’s level and will have satisfied many the ordination requirements of denominations and churches for their desired vocation. 

“With the approval of this program, we’re pleased to be able to provide a new pathway and opportunity for students to serve God and impact the community by preparing them for their calling in ministry,” said Kristen Helms, associate professor of biblical studies and academic director of Religion & Philosophy at Roberts Wesleyan University. “By deepening their understanding of the Bible through coursework focused on biblical interpretation, ministry skills and Christian apologetics, students will learn to lead conversations on polarizing topics with love, critical thinking and spiritual humility. Courses in pastoral care and biblical ethics will also equip students for challenging situations through the wisdom of scripture as they learn to embody and implement the tenets of historical Christianity in a faithful and unifying manner to transform society.”

To increase flexibility and accessibility to course offerings, the program can be taken full time or part time via an accelerated eight-week format that can be completed in approximately 12-24 months. In the exam-free curriculum, coursework consists of introductory-level courses in biblical studies, theology and ministry (36 credit hours) combined with a general coursework component (24 credit hours). Upon approval, previous academic credits and life experiences may also be applied to shorten the duration of the program and class sizes will be kept to a maximum of 25 students, instilling a sense of community and providing opportunities for focused, personalized instruction. 

Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared to pursue career paths and positions in pastoral ministry, service and nonprofit ministries, youth ministry and other settings. Students who successfully earn an A.A. in biblical studies with commendable academic performance and documented ministry experience in the form of a professional resume may also be eligible to pursue direct admission into any of the master’s programs at Northeastern Seminary at Roberts Wesleyan University.
