Campus Rocks: Literally

There’s one important reason to visit Roberts Wesleyan University before the snow falls: so you won’t miss the rocks.

Whether they were painted by a professor, student, or staff member, our campus is dotted with not-so-hidden treasures.

While students have been decorating the campus with colorful “kindness rocks” throughout the semester, they were joined by high schoolers considering Roberts.

This summer, the Undergraduate Admissions Office hosted a rock painting event for prospective students.

“I had a great time painting!” shares Lydia Fanara’25 (English Literature), pictured in the red shirt.

“It was an opportunity to be creative and strengthen new acquaintances (that are now friends).”

Later in the summer, staff members embraced the trend at the annual Staff Appreciation Day.

Mary Flaherty

Mary Flaherty, Roberts’ Director of Career Services, helped coordinate the painting.

“Doing this as a staff association event was a lot of fun, it was nice to come together with coworkers and brainstorm what messages we wanted to share for our campus community.”

“As I go through campus, I’ve seen a few of my favorites, and I’m reminded of what a wonderful, caring community we have here.”

Staff members enjoyed an afternoon of painting rocks, food, and fellowship.

Mary Flaherty has been painting kindness rocks for about 6 years.

“I think one of the reasons I gravitated toward rock painting and kindness rocks is that it provides two things I love: creativity and kindness. I’m certainly not an artist but rocks provide a small canvas to be able to create. “

“I think it’s always a nice surprise to find one and perhaps encourage or brighten someone’s day.”
