Student Spotlight: Zakariah Jantzi’22 (History)

Studying the Past to Brighten the Future

Zakariah Jantzi

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Zakariah, a History major student who is running headfirst into his future career as an attorney. He found his family at Roberts in the Track & Field and Cross Country teams… both literally and figuratively.

If you are currently employed, how do you use your Roberts education to inform your current career?

I work both on campus (in the Humanities Department office) and at home (in a family auction business). I find the analytical and research skills developed in my history education to be extremely relevant to both these jobs.

So much of my coursework at Roberts has shaped me into the person I am today. Many of the history courses I’ve taken have helped me to be a more analytical thinker.

I recommend any student with open credit space should try a history course at Roberts, as I believe it will be worth their while.

What are your career plans after graduation?

I have been accepted into the 3-year Juris Doctor (J.D.) program at University of Buffalo School of Law. I am excited to continue my education pursuing a J.D. degree!

My academic work here at Roberts directly contributed to that accomplishment, and has prepared me for the academic rigor of that institution.

How do you aspire to serve others?

As an attorney, I believe that implementing my faith into my work can be a powerful tool to help others.

I would like to use my skills developed at Roberts and in law school to promote thriving communities and peacemaking in an increasingly hostile world. I appreciate the Christian worldview in all of my courses.

What is the best thing about the Track & Field and Cross Country teams?

The Track & Field and Cross Country teams are more than just two teams of highly competitive and committed athletes – they have really been a family for me.

I’ve developed both physically and spiritually from the atmosphere on the teams. I’ve also been able to have some amazing experiences competing across the country. Not to mention, I met my fiancé through the team!

What is your favorite thing about Rochester?

Rochester has some great places for recreation. As a runner, I love using the Genesee Greenway Trail and Erie Canal Path Trail for runs and walks.

Hamlin Beach State Park is great in the springtime if you want to catch some rays at the beach!

If you could help everyone understand one thing, what would it be and why?

Well, if I had to pick one thing, I would love to help others understand the power and love of Jesus Christ.

If I could pick another, I would love to help others understand the significance of history in each of our lives. Everyone has a story, and understanding that story helps us to understand ourselves better.

Faculty Feedback

RJ Stansbury

"I've had the privilege of working with Zak as one of his professors and advisor in the history program. He has served as a Teaching Assistant for the department and worked in our Humanities office. Zak is one of our best students all around and a true exemplar of what a Roberts education is all about. He is engaging and always helps to create a community atmosphere. We all look forward to following what I’m sure will be a successful and fulfilling career."
