In Memoriam: Gary Walsh’68

We share with you the sad news of the passing of our long-time friend and colleague, Gary R. Walsh.

Gary Walsh

Reverend Bishop Garfield (Gary) Walsh'68, passed away on August 16. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ellen (McFarlane) Walsh; his sons John (Jillian) Walsh'90, Charles Walsh'93, and James (Anna) Walsh.

Gary was a member of the Board of Trustees of Roberts Wesleyan College and Northeastern Seminary 1976-1985 and served us as the Senior Vice President for Advancement and External Relations from 2008-2010. Gary was a trusted and highly sought consultant for his work in partner development, program management, mediation and governance among national denominations, mission agencies, international churches and institutions of higher education.

As a 1968 graduate of Roberts Wesleyan College, Gary was an alumnus of distinction. His career of service in academic and church settings brings together his unique gifts of administration, strategic planning and relationship-building. After Roberts, Gary earned his Master of Divinity from Asbury Seminary, was a mentor and teacher at Northeastern Seminary, Carey College, Asbury Seminary and Arrow Leadership, Inc. As a leader in the development of people, he was awarded Honorary Doctorates in Humane Letters, Sacred Theology and Divinity from institutions in New York, Illinois and Saskatchewan.

We were pleased to welcome Gary back to his Alma Mater as commencement speaker in December 2016, our 150th year. Gary also had an honorary Doctorate of Divinity which he received from Roberts Wesleyan College in 1988. He was the only person who served as Senior Pastor at Pearce Memorial FMC, was on the Board at Roberts, and was on the Cabinet at Roberts. His dedication to serving others, leading with excellence and commitment to his faith is an example for each of us. Please join us in prayer and condolence for Ellen and his extended family.
