Passing of Long-time Professor of Chemistry, Dr. Phyllis Chamberlain

Long-time Professor of Chemistry, Dr. Phyllis Chamberlain, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2020 at the age of 81. Dr. Chamberlain was a key member of the Division of Natural Science and Mathematics at Roberts Wesleyan College for more than 30 years. Because of her role teaching chemistry, she influenced students across disciplines, including many nursing alumni. She retired in 1999.

Retired Professor of Physics, Dr. Phil Ogden, remembers his years working with Phyllis fondly. “I enjoyed serving with Phyllis Chamberlain for more than 30 years. For 24 of those years, I served as Chair of the Division of Natural Science and Mathematics, so I had a close association with her in my supervision of the chemistry program. Phyllis had a strong Christian faith and testimony, and a sincere commitment to Christian higher education. I always found her to be faithful and dependable. She may have seemed at times to be quite serious, but she had a good sense of humor. She had high expectations of her students, but treated them fairly.”

Professor of Nursing, Dr. Susanne Mohnkern said, “Dr. Chamberlain was a role model for female science students. She was enthusiastic about her discipline and a good teacher of chemistry. I also remember her strong Christian testimony and enthusiasm for worship. When in her presence you knew she was enjoying interacting with learners and colleagues in an environment that is distinctively Christian.”

Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday (June 16, 2020) at the Belfast Free Methodist Church, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. The Rev. Robert J. Mackmer will officiate.
