Serving On the Frontlines

Roberts Wesleyan College student interns, for the Bachelor and Masters of Social Work, recently had an opportunity to serve our community. Scarlett Aeckerle, Assistant Professor of Social Work, runs an outreach ministry that serves community members in need with hygiene products such as soap and toothpaste. Students from the bachelor's and master's of Social Work helped, as well as Social Work Office Manager Kelly King and Enrollment Coordinator, Darlene Heitz.

The Community Hygiene Bank event, held on April 11th, served over 80 families. Those in need were helped "curbside," which the organization had never done before. To stay safe, they kept their volunteer group to ten people, wore masks and gloves, and kept socially distanced. Roberts students wrote, requested, and received the emergency grant from United Way so they could host a distribution for food and hygiene items. "It was a true Roberts Social Work project," said Aeckerly. "We spoke with people who had recently lost their jobs and elders who couldn't afford the higher prices of items or couldn't go into a store. It was heart-wrenching to hear some of these stories," she said. The team plans to do this again on Saturday May 2nd.
