Student Spotlight: Connor Starr'23

Major: Accounting and Information Management

Connor Starr

What stands out from your experience here at Roberts?

At Roberts, I am most pleasantly surprised by the quality of relationships I have built with faculty and staff. Most of the professors I’ve had are highly invested in their students and they consistently go out of their way to make college better for us all. Not only do I have a more personalized relationship with the faculty, but I also have set up a committed support system that will help me to succeed in life after college.

What is the best thing about studying Accounting?

The best thing about studying Accounting is that I am able to both further my understanding of the concepts and language of the business world and see how I will be able to apply my learning to future careers and aspirations.

What are your career plans after graduation?

After I graduate, I will most likely go on to be an accountant with a focus on management and consulting. Apart from that, I would like to start my own business, or businesses, and eventually teach at the collegiate level.

Do you have a favorite professor at Roberts?

One of my favorite professors is Jay Trainer. He taught Principles of Speech in my first semester at Roberts and he made the class very fun and interesting. In his class, I grew outside of my comfort zone with regards to public speaking… and I met my girlfriend in that class!

Share about being on the team or being part of a group and managing your course work?

At Roberts, I am a part of the JV Soccer team, the Enactus team and Student Senate. Although things can seem relatively hectic at times, I am still able to enjoy being a part of these groups while getting my work done. I make sure to be productive every day to keep up with all of my assignments and studying.

What is your favorite Roberts memory?

My favorite Roberts memory was performing at Live in Miner Men as the final performance. It was funny, creative and I had a blast performing and rehearsing with all of the other guys involved!

What is your favorite Rochester food or restaurant?

My favorite restaurant in Rochester is Pie Craft Pizza Bar, where you get to create your own specialized pizza or order from their various other quality food items.

How have you served others at Roberts – whether through service projects or volunteering?

I have been able to serve in many different ways at Roberts. I have the privilege of serving on the Student Body Senate. I have also been able to serve, give guidance, and support many inner city youth through my work in Enactus. Enactus is an entrepreneurial club for any major that equips those involved with knowledge and unique experiences for a successful future, all while making a difference in the community.

What advice would you give to a new student?

When taking classes, especially those that are major-related, remember to think about how the information you are learning will apply in your future career and how it could apply to your everyday life, as well. Also, make sure to learn your material thoroughly.

Lastly, complete a Handshake portfolio and get help from the Career Development Center. They help students find internships to apply what they are learning to real-life work. Having an internship experience in college will not only better prepare you for the future and teach you applicable knowledge, but it will also boost your chances of being successful, and further your ability to find and acquire a job that is perfect for you.

Faculty Feedback:

Dr. Daniel Barlow, Professor of Accounting

Connor is a strong student who pushes himself out of his comfort zone. During the fall semester, his first as a freshman at Roberts, Connor took some sophomore and junior level business courses from me and he excelled in them. He did this while also being actively involved in School Senate, Enactus, Junior Varsity soccer, and working a part-time job on campus. He is hard working at all times, which has given him an opportunity this semester to intern part-time at Bryant Accounting Services, a CPA firm in Rochester. Most Business and Accounting students intern during their junior or senior years. It is truly exceptional for a student to have an Accounting-related internship during his freshman year, but Connor is an exceptional student.
