Roberts Marks Black History Month with Combined Gospel Choir Performance on Feb. 2

Roberts Wesleyan College and Baber African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, will host a joint gospel choir performance in celebration of Black History Month on Saturday, February 2 at 7:30 p.m. The performance will take place in the Hale Auditorium of the Howard Stowe Roberts Cultural Life Center, located at 2301 Westside Drive, North Chili.

The concert will be a collaboration between the Roberts Wesleyan College Gospel Choir and the Voice of Praise Choir from Baber AME Church. Attendees will experience the musical stylings of both choirs with vocal selections tracing the history of spiritual and gospel music. Admission to the event is free and open to the public.

“We’re looking forward to performing with the Baber African Methodist Episcopal Church to celebrate Black History Month through gospel songs that are inspirational and engaging,” said Dr. Daniel Barta, chair of music and performing arts at Roberts Wesleyan College. “We feel it is important to remember the history of African-American spiritual music from its beginnings to the present, while adding a mix of music and narrative.”

The performance will be directed by Julius Dicks, director of the gospel choirs at Roberts Wesleyan College and Baber AME Church. Originally from Sumter, SC, Dicks holds a bachelor’s degree in Music Theory from The College at Brockport.
