Student Spotlight: Alexandria "Alex" Marci '18, Graphic Design and Marketing

Share about working on campus in the Brand and Marketing Communications team – what did you learn and what will you be able to apply to future career opportunities?

Working in the Brand and Marketing team has been a great experience.  It taught me more about what I really wanted to do with my degree after graduation --- which is to work in this field. I learned many different skills through this work experience such as; web and graphic design, contributing to marketing ideas, managing work in a fast paced environment and adapting to the different problems and situations that arise while working on a project.

What from your academic coursework at Roberts do you feel will be most helpful after you graduate?

Throughout my college experience, I have learned from different viewpoints of many professors. Because of that, I feel I am more open to ideas from both an academic and creative perspective. I have valued the teaching style of each professor I had, whether in my major or an elective class. It was good for me to hear real-world experiences that I can apply directly to my future career.

Tell me about an experience that has helped you grow while being at Roberts?

Getting the intern position in the Brand and Marketing department is my biggest memory that has helped me grow tremendously. I first interviewed with Donna McLaren, AVP Brand & Marketing Communications, during mock interviews in my Internship Prep Class taught by Professor Todd. That mock interview went well which led to an interview. And after meeting the team I was offered an internship. Working for the Brand and Marketing department has helped me learn what I want to do after graduation and has helped me grow. Because of this real-world experience, I know more about what I want in a future job and what kind of team I want to be part of.

How has your faith been transformed since being at Roberts?

One reason why I chose to attend Roberts was that I wanted to continue my faith journey upon graduation from high school and not let it fade after college. Throughout my four years here my faith has grown and stayed with me through Christ-centered learning, meeting friends for life and being part of a community. I am more open-minded about topics, have friends who share the same faith as me, and am able to put my beliefs into my discipline as well.

How are faculty inspiring you in your major?

The faculty are very encouraging and supportive. They have helped me learn more about graphic design and marketing and have challenged me to integrate them in my coursework. It has been a great experience at Roberts as a double major. Also, I feel I am prepared for career planning and the job application processes.

Where are you from?

Greenwich, NY, which about an hour from Albany.  An interesting fact is that Susan B. Anthony, women’s right activist, spent her childhood in Greenwich.

What is your favorite food to eat in Rochester?

Garbage plates all the way! They are so good!

What is your favorite spot on campus?

This time of year, it is definitely the fireplace in the library café!

Faculty Feedback:

Bill Todd

Sue Leo, M.F.A. Assistant Professor of Graphic Design

“Alex has worked diligently as a double major student in Graphic Design and Marketing. This dual major is a challenging, yet winning combination. She demonstrated her accomplishments by fusing her marketing knowledge with her visual problem-solving design acumen into an infographic series for her capstone project. Not only did she research and complete all the data acquisition for this ambitious project, she masterfully designed the series into an impressive and informative exhibit. Alex is engaged, positive and hardworking which will ensure a successful future. If being a double major wasn’t enough, she was also active with Relay for Life on campus and coordinated art student critique nights for peer-to-peer feedback. Being involved with these extracurricular activities demonstrates her ability to work with people and also her ability to bring people together in a positive environment. Additionally, Alex had the opportunity to apply her design skills at Roberts working in Marketing Communications here on campus.”
