Joshua Smith ’08 (Nursing) and ’16 (Master of Science, Nursing Administration) – Leadership in Intensive Care

Joshua Smith ’08 (Nursing) and ’16 (Master of Science, Nursing Administration) is a Nurse Manager, Intensive Care and Cardiac Telemetry Units with Rochester Regional Health at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital. Prior to this he was the Clinical Leader, Intensive Care Unit at Unity Hospital where he had oversight of daily operations for a 20-bed medical surgical intensive care unit.  Josh has held a number of leadership positions and has given presentations covering everything from patient safety to Seizure Post-Stroke at the Stroke Education Conference in 2015.  He was also recognized in 2015 with a Rochester Business Journal Health Care Achievement Award.

Roberts was a good fit for him as both an undergraduate and graduate student. He enjoyed his education and also the community.  Life-long friendships and personal development were two hallmarks of his experience.

Faculty went out of their way to be helpful and were willing to help him grow in many different areas. “Professor Scott Caton took time with me in Western Civilization class. When I inquired about Catholicism, he took me and my wife to a service and kindly took us out to lunch after. We had engaging conversation about the significance of the history and impact the Catholic Church has provided throughout history.”

Other professors were instrumental in his professional development in health care, “Dr. Griswold offered an opportunity to practice presenting graduate projects nearing the end of my master’s degree at Roberts. This relaxed atmosphere and sharing our stories provided a meaningful and valuable time that I will not forget. I think that was exemplary of the professors I have learned and gained insight from at Roberts.”

As you can tell from his resume, Josh has been very active and successful in the nursing community since graduating in 2008. The desire to keep learning and growing is a big part of that success.  Josh writes, “Take every opportunity to learn and grow. Whether it is a degree program or certification in your field, take the opportunity. There are many times when I have taken an opportunity that has opened the door to another possibility that I was not expecting…explore, discover, embrace opportunities.”

Josh lives in Newark, NY and has been married to his wife, Hannah, for 11 years. They have an 18-month old daughter Lilliana and attend New Hope Bible Church.
