Annual Mock Interview Night

Associate Professor of Marketing William Todd knows how important preparing for a job interview is when trying to land that first job or internship.  For the last decade (plus!), he has invited local business professionals from human resources, accounting, sales and marketing to come to Roberts to participate in “Mock Interview Night” with juniors and seniors who are majoring in accounting, business administration, marketing, international business, and management.  Several of the interviewers have participated for many years and Professor Todd always adds a few new managers who offer a unique perspective and share their expertise with students.

Each student provides his or her resume and has the opportunity to “interview” for a job.  Students share about their academic and work experiences and how they think their skills and capabilities could benefit the company. They have the opportunity to practice communicating key strengths and weaknesses to the interviewer.  It’s not just about sharing their skill sets, but also about communicating confidently and clearly.  Students learn to be open, honest and to sell their skills.  It’s not just about simply listing them, but more about sharing a story that highlights what they do well or how they grew from an experience.  They also learned that it is helpful to show multiple interests (sports, school activities, community involvement, etc.) on their resume.

At the end of the interview, each student receives feedback from the interviewer on what he or she did well and what could be improved.  Students get input on appearance, questions asked, their resume, and even if there was an annoying mannerism to work on.  This night of practice, is a great learning experience for students who will have interviews soon for internships and ultimately, for their first professional job right after college.
