130 Local Students Attend the 2015 Band and Choir Festival

On Friday, October 23, close to 130 high school students from across New York State arrived on campus to attend the Roberts Wesleyan College Honors Band and Choir Festival. During the three-day event, participants were kept busy with sectionals, master classes, and many hours of rehearsal time; games and activities in the newly renovated Voller Athletic Center; a recital on Saturday night featuring Roberts music students and faculty; and a Chapel service on Sunday morning.

The culminating concert took place on Sunday afternoon, October 25, in Hale Auditorium with close to 400 people in the audience, which included family and friends of the Honors students, most of whom were visiting our campus for the first time.  Under the baton of Dr. Paul Shewan, Professor of Instrumental Music at Roberts, the Honors Band opened the concert with Boysen's Kirkpatrick Fanfare.  They performed a total of six pieces, and thrilled the audience with their impressive performance of the familiar O Fortuna from Carmina Burana, Mvts. 9 and 13 by Carl Orff.

The Honors Choir portion of the program, directed by Professor David Chin, Director of Choral Activities at Roberts, opened with Haydn's uplifting choral anthem, Great and Glorious, followed by five more pieces, including their stunning rendition of Stroope's Lamentations of Jeremiah.

This inspiring and successful festival was full of memories for the Department of Music & Performing Arts and the Honors students.  Special thanks go out the high school band and choir teachers, as well as the many Roberts students and staff who supported this wonderful event.
