Partnership with Excellus BlueCross BlueShield Enables Expanded Community Outreach

Thanks to a grant from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, Roberts Wesleyan College has the opportunity to provide more training outlets for our Nursing students while directly impacting Rochester’s health at the community level.

The grant will enable us to use the Simulation and Skills Labs in the new Crothers Science & Nursing Center to train leaders from our Community Health Partners, a mix of churches, clubs and community groups with an interest in healthy living.

With health coaching and our “Train the Trainer” program, our hope is that these leaders will become the first line of defense against preventable and reversible diseases such as diabetes, obesity and heart disease as they teach nutrition, weight loss and self-care classes within their own communities.

Roberts has a robust system of partner agencies and community groups that provide our Nursing students with contact hours and valuable experience even as our students provide a benefit back to the community. The unique nature of the Excellus BCBS grant will help us increase our reach even more by concentrating efforts on key leaders who will then be better equipped to effect change from the inside.

Our first steps will be to meet groups with what they most need, providing Nursing students to help with blood pressure readings, weight checks and other basic nursing needs. Our goal over the next five years is to not only increase the number of partnerships but also move toward our “Train the Trainer” model and host community members at our new facility.
