Faculty Participate in WAVE

Written by Rachel Graham, Biology Lab Coordinator; Instructor of Biology

Dr. Emily Smithers and Rachel Graham participated in WAVE (Water Assessment by Volunteer Evaluators) training through the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation during the summer.  After completing the training, we collected benthic macroinvertebrate samples from two streams near Durand Eastman Park and collected data about the surrounding area.  The data collected from all WAVE sites is used to assess the health of wadeable streams in New York and also to augment the professional monitoring carried out by the NYS DEC Stream Biomonitoring Unit.  Anyone (student, staff or faculty) who is interested in participating as a citizen-scientist can contact either Dr. Smithers (mailto:smithers_emily@roberts.edu) or Rachel Graham (mailto:graham_rachel@roberts.edu) for more information on how to get involved.
