Graphic and Digital Design Visiting Instructor

Roberts Wesleyan University invites candidates to apply for a half-time (9-Month), non-tenure- track, visiting faculty position beginning FALL 2023. The Visual Art program is housed in the School of Arts and Humanities on our park-like campus in Rochester New York, providing the program with the advantages of a suburban setting within a vibrant metropolitan area.

Visual Art at Roberts Wesleyan University houses studio art, media art, design, and art education programs. Dedicated to nurturing artists within an artistic community, we promote appreciation of the fine arts and visual communication, integration of the arts in community service, and cooperative learning in a curriculum designed to expand students' breadth of experience and understanding in studio arts and design disciplines.

We provide students with a solid conceptual and technical education enabling them to communicate with integrity in artistically contemporary and socially responsive ways. Believing in the spirit, collaborative nature, and benefits of a Liberal Arts education, we also encourage cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary connections and collaborations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master of Fine Arts in Graphic and Digital Design or a related field—previous college or university teaching preferred.

Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to the integration of Christian faith and professional practice as well as willingness to support the University’s Christian mission and identity. A successful candidate will also have a global mindset, be able to demonstrate cultural competence, and show strong commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and belonging.

Candidates should be practicing artists willing to become an integral contributing member of a small, intense program that promotes relationship-based instruction and serves students across the University. Candidates demonstrating a synthesis of media scholarship with graphic and digital design-oriented practice are preferred. Ideal candidates will provide evidence of a comprehensive portfolio in electronic and traditional studios as well as the ability to discuss and explore the visual arts in a cross-disciplinary approach in studio and lecture-classroom instruction.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Three courses per academic year that may include courses in design for print publication, multimedia presentations, web and interactive design, typography, kinetic typography, communication design—including motion graphics—and instruction within the Foundations of Electronic Media courses. We are seeking qualified applicants who possess current subject matter expertise and teaching knowledge in the following areas:

Graphic, Digital, and Web Design

  • Adobe (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, XD, Figma)
  • Advertising & Digital Advertising
  • Art Direction
  • Branding
  • Graphic Design Portfolio
  • Integrated Design, Package Design, and Editorial Design (digital layouts for ePubs)
  • Typography (Print/Web/Digital)
  • Web Design with HTML5 and CSS3/JavaScript/GitHub
  • Visual Design Principles
  • Other Graphic Design Related Topics (specify in your cover letter)

Motion Design

  • 2D Animation, 3D Animation & 3D Drawing
  • After Effects
  • Animate
  • Explainer Videos (2D motion graphics, Illustrator, character design, and animation)
  • Sound Effects (integration of music and voice-over with 2D animation)
  • Title Sequence (movie titles)
  • Tablet Drawing
