We are honored to welcome Dr. Stephanie Smith Budhai and Dr. Marie K. Heath, authors of Critical AI in K-12 Classrooms: A Practical Guide for Cultivating Justice and Joy.

They will be presenting:

“Critical AI in Classrooms and Communities: Teaching Towards Justice in an AI-Enabled World”

Abstract:

AI in society and in education is often presented as an inevitability of extremes. It will either be an evil terminator or a brilliant savior. It will save humanity from cancer, global warming, world hunger, or it will slay us with its evil genius robot uprisings. Students will either cheat their way through school or AI will revolutionize education as we know it. Either way, the hyperbolic language sucks the air out of any other narrative, leaving little room in the story for students and teachers -- humans -- who live full and complicated lives, often working towards good within complex systems. Drs. Budhai and Heath offer an alternative to the hype by demystifying AI, advocating for radical hope, and providing a practical call to action.

Breakout Sessions and Community Conversation

In addition to the keynote, there will be breakout sessions led by experts, educators, and thought leaders to discuss how to use and shape AI responsibly. These sessions will focus on AI’s practical, ethical, and educational impacts, offering concrete insights and strategies for today’s classrooms and communities.
