Different Careers, Shared Impact by Ashanti Simmons

Today’s experiences all connected through the theme of roles, careers, and opportunities. As the day went on, each place we visited showed a different way people contribute to society and work together to support their communities. Seeing these different environments helped me reflect on how careers can impact others and how important communication and teamwork are in everyday life.

We started the day with Portuguese classes, which reminded me how important language and communication are when connecting with others. Learning Portuguese has challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone and become more patient with myself. It also made me realize how language creates opportunities for people to build relationships and understand different cultures. Even practicing simple conversations has helped me feel more connected to Brazil and the people around me.

After class, I had lunch with our buddies, which has become one of the most meaningful parts of the trip. Spending time with them allows us to learn more about Brazilian culture in a natural way through conversation and shared experiences. Our buddies help me navigate the city, practice Portuguese, and feel welcomed. It reminded me that some of the most important learning happens through human connection and cultural exchange.

Later, we walked to visit a nearby high school associated with ESEG, which was especially meaningful to me because I am studying to become a teacher. Seeing a Brazilian school environment allowed me to compare it to schools back home while also recognizing how education is valued worldwide. Even though schools may look different depending on the country, teachers everywhere play an important role in shaping students’ futures and helping them grow academically and personally. Visiting the school made me reflect more deeply on my future career and the impact educators can have on young people.

After leaving the high school, we took the subway to CNN Brazil, where we were able to see another side of professional life and responsibility. Touring the headquarters showed how many people work together behind the scenes to keep such a large news organization functioning. Every person had a specific role that contributed to the bigger goal of informing the public. Watching the teamwork and organization inside CNN reminded me how important communication, trust, and cooperation are in careers that influence society on a large scale.

By the end of the day, I realized that every experience connected back to the importance of people’s roles in society. Whether through education, journalism, language, or cultural exchange, every person contributes something valuable to their community. Today helped me think more deeply about my own future role as an educator and how understanding different cultures and perspectives can help me become a better teacher and global citizen.
