The Studio Art major provides a stron first-year Foundations Program, including courses in drawing (ART 102), 2D design (ART 103), 3D design (ART 104), and digital media (ART 105). As a part of the Foundations Program, studio majors complete a three-course sequence in art history and one course in contemporary art issues, as well as a Senior Capstone in their final year.
Through elective courses, the second year introduces students to a variety of media including ceramics, printmaking, painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and electronic media. In the last two years of the program, students select advanced courses in more specific areas of interest.
Studio Art majors may select either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree. The Bachelor of Arts degree is for those students who wish to take a broad or more liberal base of courses, while the Bachelor of Science degree represents extensive work in a studio discipline.
SPECIFICS OF THE STUDIO ART B.A./B.S. DEGREE
Minimum Total Hours: 124 for either B.A. or B.S.
Total Liberal Arts Hours Required: 90 for B.A.; 60 for B.S.
General Education Requirements: Per General Education list (see General Education Council). Exceptions:MUS 104 or FNA 102 (only one course is required and ART 101 is not permitted).
Minimum Requirements: Overall and major GPA of 2.0; no grade less than C- in the major.
Transfer Requirements: See institutional transfer policies. Transfers who intend to major in Art must submit a portfolio and meet with faculty before beginning art courses.
Application to the Major: Standard institutional major application form must be submitted by December 1 of the sophomore year. Application process will culminate with the Sophomore Review in the spring of the second year. A minimum overall and major GPA of 2.0 is required to be accepted and to remain in the major. If work is below a C, faculty will suggest a change of major.
Major Requirements for B.A. in Studio Art: 43 hours
Sequential art history courses (ART 191, 291, 391 or substitution of ART 490 for one art history course);
Upper-level issues course (ART 491) and both senior capstone courses (ART 496 and 497);
12 hours of foundations courses during first two semesters (ART 102, 103, 104, and 105);
A 9-hour focus in one studio area such as painting, printmaking, or ceramics;
6 hours of studio electives.
Major Requirements for B.S. in Studio Art: 55 hours
- Sequential art history courses (ART 191, 291, 391 or substitution of ART 490 for one art history course);
- Upper-level issues course (ART 491) and both senior capstone courses (ART 496 and 497);
- 12 hours of foundations courses during first two semesters (ART 102, 103, 104, and 105);
- 6 hours of art electives in one studio area such as painting, printmaking, or ceramics;
- A 21-hour studio concentration from the following list:
- Ceramics;
- Drawing & Painting-Emphasis: Drawing;
- Drawing & Painting-Emphasis: Painting;
- Graphic Design;
- Photography;
- Printmaking;
- Sculpture;
- Digital Media Art
