Concentrations and Major Requirements

The first year you will sample all the different media the Department offers through the Foundations courses in drawing, two-dimensional design, three-dimensional design, and digital media art. Later, you will pick a concentration (BS) or focus (BA) and specialize in that area.

 

We offer two different programs:

Studio Art (BS or BA)

includes Graphic Design and Photography

and

Digital Media Art (BS)

 

 

Which degree is right for me?

Bachelor of Science in Studio Art

Students who have a strong interest in the Visual Arts and Design and wish to have a strong core curriculum in the visual arts, which allows for more intensified study within a particular area of specialization, would opt for this degree.

For this degree, students take as many as 60 semester hours of visual art including a 21-hour concentration in at least one specialized area.

Bachelor of Science in Digital Media Art

Students with a passion for visual storytelling (film/video/photo), visual communication, media art & design, who wish to have a strong core curriculum in the visual arts, as well as communication arts and media, would opt for this degree.

For this program, students take as many as 45+ semester hours of visual media art and design as well as 18+ hours concentration in Communication/Media.

Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art

Students who wish to have a more interdisciplinary liberal arts experience, with a focus in Studio Art would opt for this degree. This is also the degree option many students choose if they wish to double major.

This degree offers a strong foundation in the visual arts that leads to a focus of 12 semester hours in at least one specialized area while providing the freedom to complete as much as 90 hours of study within other liberal arts disciplines at the college.

What if I want to include Art in my study, but not major in it?

Minor in Studio Art/Design

The minor in Art consists of at least 18 semester hours in Studio Art/Design Courses.

Students are required to take two (2) of four (4) Foundations courses (ART 102, 103, 104, and 105). Students then choose a personalized menu from any of the studio or media art & design concentrations to complete the remaining 12 credit hours. 

Choices include: 

Photography, Graphic Design, Drawing & Painting, Ceramics & Sculpture, Digital Media Art (film/video) or a combination of these.
