Michael McGinnis, '11

Michael shared that he chose Roberts for the Christian environment,and the marketing program. "I feel I learned to open up to not only answers, but the ability to question and continue progressing in a never ending process of learning  I grew spiritually too through creating my own view".

Professors Bill Todd and Carrie Starr (both from the School of Business) provided opportunities and experiences that helped shape his start into marketing.

Professor Todd introduced Michael to Dixon Schwabl, a full-service advertising, public relations and digital media agency, through touring the agency as a student and working with their public relations team with Enactus. He shared that Professor Carrie Starr helped prepare him for a career by giving him practical, real-life experience through Enactus and constant encouragement.

As a marketing major, the Business program encouraged us to become servant leaders, even dedicating class lectures to this topic and hosting an annual essay writing contest. In essence, servant leadership promotes for leaders to bring out the best in the people they serve.

Little did I know I would eventually work for a social venture whose entire model is founded upon the same servant leadership philosophy I learned right here at Roberts.

Without my education, I wouldn’t have ever been promoted to Vice President of Arena Marketing, traveled to over 45 countries or had the opportunity to spend the best hours of my day fighting to ending extreme poverty globally. Attending Roberts helped me thrive, personally and professionally.
