Major Requirements

Minimum Total Hours: 124

Total Liberal Arts Hours: 60

For General Education Requirements see the requirements list that can be found under the General Education Council. Exceptions to the requirements are as follows: Foreign language proficiency excluded since it is accomplished through the major; only one fine arts course is required (ART 101, MUS 104, OR FNA 102); PSY 203 must be taken to meet the behavioral science requirement; GEO 201 must be taken to meet the history, economics, or social sciences requirement.

Minimum Requirements: Students must maintain a GPA of 2.7 in the major and overall. Students must receive no grade less than a C in the major; a minimum grade of C in CMC 101, CMP 101, and mathematics proficiency course; a minimum grade of C+ in 100-level EDU courses; and a minimum grade of B- in 200+ level EDU courses.

Application to Major: A special application form and requirements must be obtained from the Department of History or online at the Department’s intranet page (the standard institutional major application will not be accepted). The application must be submitted at the end of the sophomore year. A minimum overall GPA of 2.7 is required to be accepted into and to remain in the major. In addition, students must apply to the Department of Teacher Education after completing two EDU courses (EDU 185 and EDU 195) and must apply to student teach by the appropriate deadline. Contact the Teacher Education Department for specific deadlines and forms.

Major Requirements: 33 hours as follows:

Version I-One Semester Study Abroad

  • SPN 203 or 205;
  • SPN 215;
  • Study abroad (9-15 hours);
  • SPN 320;
  • Select from the following to complete the 33-hour major (a minimum of 6 semester hours in Spanish literature are required): SPN 225, 270, 315, 330, 331, 340, 345, 350.

Version II-Summer Study Abroad

  • SPN 203;
  • SPN 205;
  • SPN 215;
  • SPN 310 or 311;
  • SPN 320;
  • Study abroad (3-9 hours);
  • Select from the following to complete the 33-hour major (a minimum of 9 semester hours in Spanish literature are required): SPN 225, 270, 315, 330, 331, 340, 345, 350.

Version III-No Study Abroad

  • SPN 203;
  • SPN 205;
  • SPN 215;
  • SPN 310 or 311;
  • SPN 320;
  • Any six of the following with a minimum of 9 semester hours in Spanish literature: SPN 225, 270, 315, 330, 331, 340, 345, 350.

Students who are pursuing Adolescence Education Spanish for grades 7-12 (with an extension in Spanish for grades 5-6) are also required to complete:

  • A 39-hour core of education courses (EDU 185, 195 & 195 OPE, 235, 260, 294, 357 & 357 OPE, 360 & 360 OPE, 385 & 385 OPE, PSY 203 Lab, 402A & 402B, 442);
  • Training in Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment;
  • Training in School Violence Prevention and Intervention;
  • 100 hours of fieldwork, called observation-participation experience (OPE).

Students who are pursuing dual certification in Adolescence Education Spanish for grades 7-12 and Students with Disabilities 7-12 Generalist are required to complete:

  • A 54-hour core of education courses, including courses for teaching content to students with disabilities (EDU 185, 195 & 195 OPE, 235, 294, 357 & 357 OPE, 360 & 360 OPE, 365 & 365 OPE, 385 & 385 OPE, 390, PSY 203 Lab, HST 361, LIT 361, MTH 361, SCI 361, 402A & 402B, 442);
  • Training in Identification and Reporting of Child Abuse and Maltreatment;
  • Training in School Violence Prevention and Intervention;
  • 150 hours of fieldwork, called observation-participation experience (OPE).
