Student Spotlight: Sara Gendrue- Junior ’21

Major: Media

Sara Gendrue

What stands out from your experience here at Roberts?

Here at Roberts, I have found a major and community I love. My experience stands out because I have managed to be a part of many things on campus, such as Student Association Leadership Team (SALT) and swimming. I will graduate in three years as I had 18 credits coming in and I took more than the average classes each semester to make this happen.

What is the best thing about studying Media?

The best thing about studying Media is learning about how relevant it is in today’s world from digital media, writing for the web, media management and how media affects consumers. Our society revolves around media and it is very beneficial to be learning about this everyday.

What are your career plans after graduation?

I have left my plans after graduation open to whatever God calls me to. I would love a job in the media industry but also have many other interests my major applies to.

What is your favorite course here at Roberts?

My favorite course has been Writing for Digital Media. Taking this class opened the door to a new area of interest. In this class, I enjoyed creating a website, including a blog, for a café in my hometown. My professor, Dr. Song, has high expectations for students and that challenged me to do my best on this project.

Share about being on the team, or being part of a group, and managing your course work?

As a swimmer, for breaststroke and individual medley, I have 10 practices over the course of six days. This can be very challenging to manage athletics and academics, but it also makes me more organized with my time and my work. It holds me accountable.

What’s your favorite food at Garlock?

I really like the banana bread – with butter. They don’t have it all the time, but when they do I am excited for it!

What is your favorite Roberts memory?

This is my second year on the swimming team and we are going to Miami for training over winter break. We will be staying for one week and it will be a great time for team bonding both in the pool and on the beach.

What is your favorite Rochester food?

The city’s iconic Garbage Plate is my favorite! Our team had a dinner at our coach Sara’s house and she made them. It was my first time having one and it was so good – even though I don’t like my food touching!

How have you served others at Roberts?

I have always been a part of service projects growing up. At Roberts, serving others is part of being a student here. This fall, I helped rake leaves with athletes from many teams at Roberts. It was nice to be able to help others in the community.

What advice would you give to a new student?

Take college credits before college, and/or over the summer, to get ahead. It really makes a difference.

Faculty Feedback:

Hojin Song, Assistant Professor of Communication

“Sara is an earnest student who brings in positive energy to everyone around her. As a student athlete, she never left aside her academic work. She also strives for her best as she works toward a career in the field of digital marketing. With her internship with the Marketing department this semester, Sara has been excited to learn new skills in design and video-editing software. She plans to graduate early and works very hard toward that goal. Sara also brings positive and encouraging energy to the classroom and her peers.”
