Totally Stressed Out: Tips for Overcoming Stress.

Stress levels are on the rise, and today’s college students report feeling more stressed out than ever before. 86% of college students reported feeling overwhelmed by all they had to do; 44% indicated experiencing more than the average amount of stress, and 12% reporting a tremendous amount of stress. 

Stress is a normal part of life and sometimes we actually need it! Stress is the body’s natural response to a threat or demand, whether it’s actually there or you just think it’s there.  “Fight or Flight” kicks in when you’re under stress, which helps you to stay alert, react fast, and get yourself out of danger. Additionally, stress can help you stay focused to get things done. It’s what motivates you to finish that paper, study for that next exam, and meet our goals. While experiencing stress is normal, and sometimes productive, chronic (ongoing) stress, or major stressors can contribute to the development of other emotional or physical problems. 

People experience stress for a number of reasons. Some common stressors among college students include the overwhelming amount of school work, exams, maintaining a social life on top of academic responsibilities, relationships, conflict with roommates, limited finances, being away from home, sports, time management, and the list goes on. Stress is one of the most common things that brings students into college counseling centers, along with anxiety and depression. Chronic stress that is not addressed, can negatively affect your mind and body. Below are some signs that you may be experiencing too much stress AND some practical tips for how to help yourself when you’re feeling stressed.
