Justice and Security Institute to Host Threat Assessment Conference in May

Roberts Wesleyan College’s Justice and Security Institute (JSI) will partner with the Association of Threat Assessment Professional’s (ATAP) Northeast Chapter to host a day-long threat assessment and management training event on Wednesday, May 22. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be held in the Cultural Life Center on campus.

Presentations will focus on threat assessment and management strategies that inform the policy and practice of behavioral threat assessment and threat management in schools, businesses, houses of worship and governmental agencies.

Specific topics presentations will address throughout the day include:

  • Legal considerations in threat assessment and a summary of the NYS Red Flag law
  • School climate and how it relates to school safety   
  • Malignant narcissism: maintaining vigilance when undertaking threat assessment work
  • Threat assessment and threat management in a major national corporation
  • Protecting houses of worship in an increasing threat environment
  • Community-based responses to high-risk cases involving threats of targeted violence and concerning behavior
  • The evolution of threat assessment and ATAP's role in shaping its future

“We’re looking forward to partnering with the Association of Threat Assessment Professional’s Northeast Chapter to offer this educational training opportunity for the community,” JSI Director Joe Testani said. “The JSI is committed to providing organizations with the knowledge and practices to effectively manage and respond to threats and crisis situations. By combining the knowledge, expertise and experience of both the JSI and ATAP, we’ll be able to work closely with attendees throughout the day to foster an open dialogue about threat assessment and set them up for success.”

Tickets for the training are $35 per person, which includes a light breakfast and lunch, and registration is required in advance. About The Association of Threat Assessment Professionals

The Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) was founded in 1992 as a nonprofit organization comprised of law enforcement, prosecutors, mental health professionals, corporate security experts, probation and parole personnel, and others involved in the area of threat and violence risk assessment. The purpose of ATAP is to afford its members a professional and educational environment to exchange ideas and strategies to address such issues as stalking, threats and homeland security. The primary focus of this organization is to provide the necessary knowledge, tools and support to better prepare our membership to handle these types of situations. Our commitment is to expertly address these issues through seminars, training and networking with other professionals working in this field.

The JSI is committed to socially responsible engagement in society, leading research, evaluation and training efforts to enhance policy and practice in the areas of Homeland Security, social justice and restorative justice. Threat assessment training through the JSI is available for K-12 schools, colleges and universities, law enforcement and security professionals, businesses and organizations, and prominent individuals. Training options will soon be expanded to include ethics, intellectual property rights and counterterrorism for public and private sectors.
