Student Spotlight: Katie Ashley '20, Nursing

What stands out from your experience here at Roberts?

One thing about my experience at Roberts that stands out is the quality and character of the professors. Not only have they all been extremely knowledgeable about the subjects, but they also make an effort to form personal relationships with their students. Caring professors make a difference.

What is the best thing about studying nursing?

One of the best parts of studying nursing is the sense of community. It’s a difficult major, but we all help each other through it. We are all like family, and we support each other in the times that feel easier and those that are more difficult. We are challenged in this major, which helps to prepare us for a future career in healthcare.

What nursing career specialty would you like to go into? Why?

I’m not sure yet, but labor and delivery or pediatrics are two areas that I am especially interested in. I love children, and I think the birth of a child is one of the most exciting things to support a patient through. I would love to be a nurse who is a part of that experience of fostering a strong relationship between the patient and the nurse. However, I’ve enjoyed all types of nursing; so I’m open to other areas as well.

Your favorite course here at Roberts?

My favorite courses at Roberts, so far, have been my clinical courses. Being in the hospital and doing hands-on work has been educational, fun and rewarding.

Where are you from (hometown)?

I am from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It’s about five hours from Roberts.

Favorite ice cream?

My favorite ice cream is mint chocolate chip, but I especially love Grasshopper Pie ice cream from Perry's.

Favorite spot on campus?

My favorite spot on campus is the Voller Athletic Center (VAC). I enjoy going to sporting events, working out, playing ping pong and socializing with friends in the student spaces.

What is your favorite Roberts memory so far?

One of my favorite memories was going to Israel this past summer with a group of Roberts students. It was an amazing and humbling experience to travel to the place where Jesus lived and began His ministry. It is a beautiful country too!

Faculty Feedback:

Laura Coles

Laura Coles, MS, RN, Traditional Nursing Program, Assistant Clinical Professor

“Katie Ashley is a student nurse who truly exemplifies what it means to pair faith and scholarship as she cares for others in the name of Christ. She consistently approaches learning experiences (even the unexpected ones) with a consistent enthusiasm and unquenchable cheerfulness. Katie is a gentle leader who encourages others towards excellence and cares for patients with compassion and tenderness. Her participation in JV Women's Soccer and work at Pearce 4 Kids characterize her team mentality and calling to work with children both personally and professionally. Christ’s light shines through Katie on the hospital units and in the hallways of Roberts as she drinks deeply of experiences and pours into others. Teaching and working clinically with students like Katie makes working at Roberts a joy."
