Alumni Spotlight: Sonnette M. Bascoe ’16 Assistant Professor of Psychology

Ever since Sonnette Bascoe chose to pursue a doctorate in Psychology, she had a deep desire that her work in that field would be meaningful to the world around her. After obtaining her PhD from the University of Rochester, she moved into a position as an adjunct professor at SUNY Geneseo. While there, Dr. Bascoe began researching a career as a school psychologist and, from there, discovered and enrolled in the Masters of School Psychology program at Roberts.

Sonnette immediately felt at home at Roberts and enjoyed the culture that allowed her to embrace her Christian beliefs and incorporate them into her educational career. “My time as a student in the school psychology program truly taught me how to connect my head with my heart and engage my hands in service to students and their families,” says Bascoe. She credits her professors and the course content for helping her to understand how significant the role of the psychologist is to the welfare of youth. “I remember thinking that if I ever had the opportunity to return to academia, Roberts would be my dream college to serve as a professor and help train effective, future school psychologists who are phenomenal in their work,” she recalls.

Who knew that Sonnette would only work in the field of school psychology for such a short time before her dream would become a reality! In less than two years, the opportunity arose for Sonnette to join the faculty at Roberts and she jumped at the chance. She thinks fondly of a professor who made a significant impact on her during her Master’s program, Keri Bassett. Dr. Bassett went above and beyond to create meaningful content that brought her coursework to life. Now, as a professor herself, Dr. Bascoe strives for this same level of excellence, giving students authentic, practical experiences to mold their future work as psychologist, counselors and clinicians. Already Dr. Bascoe has received feedback from her students that she has made an influence on their ministry work. As such, Sonnette continues to engage her heart, head and hands in meaningful work – imparting analytical and experiential knowledge to students who will, in turn, make a positive impact on their workplace and community.

Did we mention that during her educational career at Roberts, Sonnette became a mom to twin boys? The Bascoes are also parents to an older son and daughter and their family of six enjoys music and worship at the Father’s House. Sonnette serves as a Girl Scout leader for her daughter’s troop. Roberts Wesleyan is delighted to welcome Dr. Bascoe back to the campus community.
