A Summer at Csehy (RWC Faculty Spotlight)

The Csehy Summer School of Music unites high school students from around the world every summer for musical instruction in a Christian context. The Csehy experience includes private lessons, theory classes, major ensemble performances, and student, faculty, and composer recitals.

Csehy is a summer highlight for Roberts faculty members Dr. Paul Shewan, Dr. Adam Potter, and Julie Runion.

Dr. Paul Shewan has conducted the Csehy orchestra since 1993, often instructing trumpet, as well. After rehearsing from Monday through Friday, the major ensembles join for an exciting performance at the end of each week. Dr. Shewan enjoys meeting the challenge of this fast-paced schedule, remarking that the group is a fine orchestra. He writes, “The emphasis on Christian community and strong performances makes it a unique summer camp. We have a great time with faculty and students.”

This was Dr. Adam Potter’s sixth summer on faculty at Csehy. He directs the all-camp choir and chamber choir, teaches voice lessons, and co-teaches a music theory class. Dr. Potter loves Csehy because, in his words, "It is - from the first thing in the morning to the last thing at night - so Christ-centered. Every minute of every day is an opportunity to worship through song, prayer, study of the Word, and conversation. It’s wonderful. Also, I owe Csehy for introducing me to my current colleagues, Paul Shewan and Julie Runion. So, I’m very grateful for that.”

Julie Runion has taught at Csehy for eight years. She teaches piano, plays for morning chapel services, and accompanies faculty and student recitals. All three of her children attend the camp, so it has become a summer tradition for her family. She writes, “I love working with students and faculty members who strive to serve Christ through musical excellence. The Csehy community has become like family to us, and our Csehy family has been instrumental in our children's spiritual development.”
