Women's Track & Field Win First Ever NCCAA National Championship

WINONA LAKE, Ind. – For the first time in program history, the Roberts Wesleyan women's track and field team has won the NCCAA Track & Field National Championship. The men's team finished in sixth place out of a field of 25 teams.
 
Chelsea Hayward was named Female Athlete of the Meet after winning the 100m (11.69), 200m (23.98), 4x100m relay (46.37), and 4x400m relay (3:53.17). The senior paced the Redhawks to 117 points to outlast second place team McMurry who finished in second with 97 points.
 
Kristina Button continued the sprint event dominance for Roberts taking first in the 400m in what was a classic finish, crossing the line in 57.04. Kathleen Amstad added a second place finish in the 100m with a time of 12.10.
 
In the 1500m race the Redhawks took spots two through four to score important points. Brittany Shumway placed second (4:56.11), Addison Sgroi was third (4:56.22) and Ashley Watson placed fourth (4:57.71). Sgroi also had a second place finish in the 800m crossing the line in 2:22.62.
 
In the 3000m steeplechase Moriah Martone placed third recording a time of 12:05.78.
 
Along with winning the title the Redhawks coaching staff earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
 
On the men's side Ashton Colaire was the sole national champion winning the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.44. Colaire also grabbed a fourth place finish in the 400m hurdles (54.97).
 
In the longest race of the meet the Redhawks had two place in the top three. In the 10,000m race, Anthony Casullo and Benjamin Matz finished second and third respectively. Casullo posted a time of 34.05.67 and Matz finished in 34:18.01.
 
Freshman James Betts was a third place finisher in the 1500m race with a time of 4:07.92.
 
In the field events Paul Dunbar scored six points with a third place finish in the pole vault (4.35m).
 
Roberts had a total of 13 All-American selections with the women receiving eight and the men receiving five. The Redhawks also had 10 scholar-athletes.
