Alumni Spotlight: Lee Ana Hess’16

Lee Ana Hess’16 (International Business and Spanish) has been accepted into the Peace Corps and will depart for the Dominican Republic on August 21 to begin training as an education volunteer. Hess will live and work in a community to strengthen its childhood literacy programs.

“The way Peace Corps seeks to create change attracted me to it,” said Hess. “Changes occur when relationships and trust is built, and not when it is forced upon people.”

Prior to joining the Peace Corps, she volunteered with AmeriCorps VISTA Enactus. As a student at Roberts, Hess was a member of Enactus and presented with the team in 2016.

During the first three months of her service, Hess will live with a host family in the Dominican Republic to become fully immersed in the country’s language and culture. After acquiring the necessary skills to assist her community, Hess will be sworn into service and assigned to a community in the Dominican Republic, where she will live and work for two years with the local people.

“I am excited to build new relationships with both my fellow Peace Corps volunteers and the people of my new community,” Hess said. “I wish to gain more perspective on how others view the world and have an impact, even if small, on those I will serve.”

Hess will work in cooperation with the local people and partner organizations on sustainable, community-based development projects that improve the lives of people in the Dominican Republic and help her develop leadership, technical and cross-cultural skills that will give her a competitive edge when she returns home.
