Deepening Your Faith In College

2 minute read

According to the Pew Research Center, 66% of American college graduates identify as Christian. However, only 51% of these surveyed graduates report praying daily, and 61% of the students “seldom/never” participate in prayer, scripture study, or religious education groups.

How can college students beat these odds and use college as an opportunity to shine their light brighter and deepen their faith?

To answer that question, we spoke with Elizabeth Potash’23 (Psychology). She is the student Campus Ministry Director, a student-elected position serving on the Student Association Leadership Team. She shares her own story, describes some of Roberts’ efforts to enrich our student’s spiritual journey, and offers advice for those looking to deepen their faith.

Can you describe what part Roberts has played in your own faith journey?

I was fairly new in my faith when I came to Roberts. In the time I’ve spent here, I’ve come into my own. God has provided me with a wonderful church that has instilled in me a love of sound theology and in turn, a deeper understanding of just how merciful and loving He is.

Taking this maturity back to campus, I’ve been able to find fellowship with people that are encouraging, are honest with me, and point me to the gospel above all.

What are some of the ways Roberts nourishes its students' faith?

There are many student-led small groups and bible studies on campus that each offer a different perspective and atmosphere. As the student ministry director, I also organize monthly Sunday night chapel opportunities. Those have been really great chances to think outside of the box.

We’ve had a panel discussion on “Christianity and Mental Health,” a documentary viewing on the modern American church, and plenty of worship and relaxation time.

What advice do you have for students who want to grow their faith at Roberts?

If you’re a Christian, don’t be afraid of your Bible or think of it as homework.

Too often we get caught up in everyday school stress. We expect God to speak to us in big ways or magically solve our problems. We neglect that He speaks to us in all things, we just have to prioritize being in His word.

Anything else you'd like to share?

Following Christ is not easy. Neither is being a college student. Surround yourself with people who love you, ask tough questions and search for truth, and rest in the knowledge that your hard work does not go unnoticed.

There are always people at Roberts ready to care for you and “go to bat” for you, myself included, and we pray for you everyday.
